On Getting Your Book Published: Part 2

This past Friday morning I sent an email to Page Publishing.  Edit Approved.  After their editors went over the manuscript I was invited to re-read it again to see if everything was ok.

I did, and found a few problems.  Not big ones, mind you, mostly problems I had with the flow of conversations.  These I changed, sending them on with the line numbers indicated and how the new sentence was supposed to read.  I even found a misspelled word.  Where is spellcheck when you need it?  Actually the "misspelled word" was spelled correctly, it was simply the wrong word.  These revisions were quickly resolved and the corrected manuscript was put up for further scrutiny. 

Oh well,  little things do get missed.  It sort of focuses the mind to know this will be the last time I read this book while the text is still fluid.  Of course, if this process drags on and on, the work will never be finished and never be published either.  As with any project, there must be a date when all is done.

The next step?  Typesetting.  I have no idea which font they will determine to be the best.  I'm not an expert in these matters, so I'll leave the choices entirely up to them with minimal input to me.

On Getting Your Novel Published

Two weeks ago yesterday I was introduced to Courtney.  She is my Publication Coordinator for Page Publishing. 

A little history is perhaps in order.

I wrote a novel and finished it last year.  Afterward the question came up, how do I know if this story  is good enough for publication?  Around that time I saw a commercial for Page Publishing.  Actually it's the only commercial I've ever seen of theirs.  I remembered their name and took a look at their web site.  Then I sent them an email saying I had wrote this novel and was wondering if they would take a look at it. 

A few days later I got a call from Bruce.  He is my book agent.  He talked to me for a bit and gave me the low-down.  I would send the novel to him and he would read part of it.  About 20 pages or so.  If he liked what he read, he would recommend the book to Page's board.  They would read it and come to a conclusion, publish or not. 

I sent Bruce the story, and he liked it.  He passed it on to the board and told me it would take about two weeks for them to get back to me.  One week later I got the next call from Bruce.  They would agree to publish my book.  Cool!  But publication is not without a price.  I would have to provide a fee for them to edit, typeset, print, copyright, and otherwise promote the book.  At the time I didn't have the money, and it seemed the idea of publishing my own novel was little more than a pipe dream.

In the ensuing months my financial situation changed somewhat, and I was finally able to gather the resources to enlist their services.  My check went out to them about three weeks ago.  Shortly thereafter I was introduced to Courtney.  Bruce is the guy who makes initial contact with potential novelists,  while Courtney is the inside contact.  She is the one who will oversee the various aspects of publication.  Editing the manuscript, of course.  Also, cover design and everything else.  I've already sent a description of what I think the cover art to be, and my three-line bio.  I'm not going crazy on that part.  People are working behind the scenes to create my novel.  It's a comforting thought. 

My experience with Page Publishing is completely a good one.  My original contact, Bruce is a very nice guy, personable and has great reassurance in his voice.  When I didn't have the money to continue with the book, he would keep in contact, calling every so often to find out how things were going.  It was a great pleasure to let him know we could continue.  Courtney is equally nice, positive and realistic.  If everyone in the company is like them, it must be a great place to work. 

Right now I am working on the text for the back cover of the book.  I hope to finish this project in the next day or so, and send it to her Monday.

Candidate of the Apocalypse: Episode 16

Dueling Commercials

“It’s really kind of simple.”  Charles was explaining his stance on economics. “Now you can study Economics from high school all the way to the PhD level.  But the plain truth is this - when people have more money, they are going to spend more money.”  He was making economics a key issue of his campaign.  “So now the question is, what can government do, to help you take home more money in your paycheck?”  With that he directed the audience and they simultaneously shouted:  “Lower Taxes!”  Charles smiled broadly and ended the commercial with a “Yes!”

He had embraced what is called the ‘Fair Tax’.  This involves changing the present system of taxation to that of a national sales tax.  A major university and some economic professors had spent about 20 million dollars testing this idea and calculated that present governmental revenues would be maintained with a tax of 15 - 20% levied on new products.  Not only that, but since this was to be a consumer tax, it would encourage people to save money.  There were a couple of caveats with this system, like how the poor would fare, but provisions would be in place to help them, in the form of monthly reimbursement for the taxes they had spent the month before.  The most exciting part of this new arrangement would be a massive power shift from government to the individual.  And, to top it off, once the changes were in place and the economy responded, the government would wind up with more money than before.  

It was so simple and straightforward that the powers that be in Washington, and even his own party couldn’t get their heads around it.  But the people did.  The ad received almost 100 percent favorable reactions by the public.  The other party wasn’t going to let this go without an answer.  So they put forth a commercial saying that Charles wanted to increase taxes by 20%.

A few days later a new ad appeared.  Charles was again in the middle of a crowd, answering questions.  He responded to a question about the ad thusly.  “They say that I want to increase taxes by some 20%.  Really?  I guess they can’t even understand the word, ‘replace’.  I want to replace the present system with the Fair Tax, not add!  You guys are paying enough in taxes already.  You know, there are laws in place for truth in advertising.  Apparently they don’t apply to politics.”  

That ad, like most of his other ones, received a firestorm of criticism from the other side.   It did demonstrate the effectiveness of Charles’ commercials.  He fired the other firm partly because they wanted to go primarily with negative ads;  Partly because they didn’t want to say anything of substance.  The present agency used multiple cameras  to record his every statement before a crowd.  Often a long speech on a major topic could be parsed down to a few key tag lines.  These would be edited into a commercial and in a day or two be national.  It allowed Charles to quickly and precisely answer the opposition and speak to the issues at hand.  Of course, there were lots of negative ads flying around, but that was because of various interest groups.  Charles had no control over them, the law allowed just about anybody with money and an opinion to buy media time and say it.  Whenever asked, he firmly distinguished his ads from all others.  

One unlikely group supported Charles.  The press.  Why was a mystery.  Especially since they were known to favor the present administration.  Perhaps it was because he was the underdog, or a breath of fresh air in terms of candor.  Charles never used a teleprompter, often had only a few notes in hand, and made no demands.  He actually enjoyed the give and take from reporters, it was a challenge he relished.  

In order to really make the economics work properly Charles’ team had worked out a two pronged strategy.  Lowering, or changing tax law would be good, but only a start.  The second part would be perhaps more difficult.  It entailed reducing the size and scope of government.  This would not be an easy task since both parties wind up making a lot of money by making promises to constituents.  Unofficially it’s called ‘buying votes’.  Under the guise of helping people.  

Fortunately for Charles the way he had set up his campaign from the beginning allowed him access to a lot of different people.  Former ambassadors for example, public servants, both active and retired stepped up to help him.  They understood the gravity of this election.  His staff made sure their thoughts and wisdom on handling government bureaucracy got through.  Charles even held a number of ‘off book’ meetings with the most skilled of them.  Meaning these were done without the knowledge of his own party.  

He had found that when people voluntarily came together to accomplish a task, good things happened.  Above all, in his public statements and in his ads, he wanted to tell the truth about what was going on.  But in a way that empowered the electorate.  It would be very easy for them to sound like conspiracy theorists and simply be dismissed as a bunch of nut-jobs.  

How did the opposing party feel about Charles’ campaign?  At the very highest levels and in public they simply laughed him off.  It was absurd, to them anyway, that a businessman with no political experience should be able to beat a sitting Executive. He wasn’t even a billionaire!  They, at this juncture wouldn’t agree to a debate between the two.  In the lower levels of the party things weren’t so rosy.  These were the ones who kept their fingers on the pulse of America.  As the weeks ran on their smug smiles started to turn to frowns.  Maybe they should be taking this a little more seriously.  Charles’ message was taking hold.  

He was rising in the polls.

Candidate of the Apocalypse: Episode 15

There was still two months to the election and Charles was in trouble. Again. This time it was about education. Charles was being interviewed at a local cafe by a reporter in Des Moines. The reporter asked. "What are your thoughts on No Child Left Behind."
Charles replied, "The federal government should get out of the education game. Not the least because our Constitution does not give the government power to educate. We all know that education is a privilege, not a right. There is one and only one group responsible for educating children. Parents."
 
As a result of that quip the major teachers unions came out against him, but those of his own party were not pleased either. Especially since they were in power when this program was voted in. But Charles was not willing to back down on this issue. In order to win the common voter he knew that he would have to come down hard on government overspending. Of all kinds. He also held the view 'there are more of us than them'. In other words, even though a particular union or interest group might campaign against him, these same groups were composed of relatively few people compared to the general public.
 
In a couple of days a new ad appeared. This was part of a speech he made at a local gathering in the little town of Ames. "Let's talk about a little program the government initiated called 'no child left behind.' It's been in place long enough for us to know it's effectiveness. So is it a success? Absolutely not. It's a dismal failure, by every measure. So what are we to do? Keep supporting a bad program? You've got to be kidding! If we are serious about cutting the size and scope of government, we will have to consider every program, regardless of its origin. All programs must be scrutinized. All inefficiencies must be rooted out and eliminated. We no longer have the money to simply fund everything. By the way, isn't this your money too? Do you really want your money spent on failure?"
 
In spite of the controversy generated over his statement, Charles ultimately came out ahead. People appreciated that he spoke his mind. Also, they knew deep down that he was right.
 
All the while, on the outside it seemed his candidacy was rolling along and gathering momentum. Charles was all smiles and graciousness. But behind the scenes things were less so. Besides the daily grind of the campaign. From inside the national party there were indications that all was not well. His manager knew this explicitly. The party made promises that it didn't keep. Funding mysteriously disappeared. Support for his directives waned. No good reason was given. It just happened. These machinations took precious resources from working toward his election, and were a source of constant frustration.
But there was something else.
 
The threats had returned.

Candidate of the Apocalypse: Episode 14

“I’m the candidate.”
 
Charles’ unexpected win sent shock waves through the political world.  With it came a measure of fame, and a ton of money.  It’s amazing how much is spent on a national election.  But money comes at a price, in the form of staff from the party.  These were people whom Charles did not know, and had not developed trust.  Some were gung ho about him while others had a more stand-offish attitude.  Their resources were invaluable though.  Otherwise Charles wouldn’t stand a chance..  His core people knew this and had discussed it at length in the run up to Iowa.  Some administrative tasks would be moved over to his campaign manager and others.  They would be Charles’ eyes and ears as everything went forward.  He would be kept apprised of developments and make the final decisions.  
From this point on Charles was in what they called ‘Presidential Mode’.  It is well known that any head of state does not do anything himself.  This isn’t saying they are lazy, it means that all actions are delegated.  The head guy makes the decision and says, ‘make it so’’ and it gets done by whatever means possible.  So the lines of communication went like this, from Charles, to his personal staff, to the national party and back.  A simple arrangement that would allow some time for everyone to get used to each other.  Charles would concentrate exclusively on appearances and preparation.  The most important part was to hit the ground running.  There was precious little time until the election, and he was up against an incumbent.  
It proved to be another shock when, just three weeks later Charles had a meeting with the agency which was coordinating all his ads, and matter-of-factly fired them.  
 
While party spokesmen downplayed the firing as a simple difference of opinion.  The internal fireworks were quite spectacular.  The top party hacks held a meeting with Charles and told him he couldn’t fire them.  Charles said, “That’s not true, I’ve already done that.”  They replied something about long-term contracts but Charles interrupted them.  “I’m the candidate, aren’t I?  As the candidate I am also the de-facto head of the party.  I make the final decision. They are out.  Period.”  
 
It was more than just a difference of opinion.  It was a difference in worldview.  The party agency wanted to create pat, negative ads like they had done many times before.  Charles was vehemently opposed to such things, having watched them for years.  He knew how unpopular and ineffective they were.  His plan was overwhelmingly positive.  He wanted to use snippets from speeches and interviews to explain the current wrongs perpetrated by government and offer sound, practical solutions.  These snippets would put his face in front of the American public, and hopefully capture some of his personal charisma as he handled the press.  Further, he wanted to focus on the top two issues, the economy, and governmental overreach.  If these two were not brought under control, the rest would be more or less a moot point.  His tag line was a single word:  Freedom.  However, the old agency fought this tooth and nail.  They never want a candidate to offer concrete suggestions.  This sets him up for criticism or ridicule from the other side.  In their mind it was obvious that Charles knew nothing about running an ad campaign.  Their condescending attitude became too much for the candidate.  He chose an agency which could do better.    

From that point on there was conflict with the national party.

Candidate of the Apocalypse: Episode 13


"The Convention"

August 27:  Miami, Florida
Charles and company were elated, but exhausted.  While most of the other potential candidates had sequestered themselves to prep for this event, and the requisite debates, he had continued apace with his schedule.  He still had a standing offer to speak with any group, anywhere, but now his minimum crowd expectancy was 1,000 people or more.  And he had to turn down meetings.  Charles’ popularity was soaring.  He found time to prepare while travelling and when the rest of the world was sleeping.  
The convention itself was something of a madhouse.  But Charles and company seemed to draw energy from the crowds.  But he was also quite aware that his every move was going to be scrutinized by the delegates and powers that be.  The slightest misstep could spell disaster for a candidate.  At the start of the convention eight men were vying for the candidacy.  But it was only the top few who were considered the real contenders.  Every day there was debate, speeches, and voting.  The group thinned rapidly.  The first to drop out were the bottom  two.  Then, quite unexpectedly, the number two guy did the same.  Charles moved up a notch.  The last debate would ultimately decide who the candidate was.  
Four men stood on the stage before a packed house as the moderator gave the debate rules.  All that work, money spent, time, and preparation came down to these few minutes.  This was it.
Charles was relaxed and precise with his answers, showing he had a good grasp of the issues at hand.  Every once in a while he would slip in some of his characteristic subtle sarcasm.  The crowd responded with enthusiasm.  Then, halfway through, a question was asked about illegal immigration.  
Charles reply:
“Let me ask you a thought question.  Who owns America?  Does the Federal Government own it?  Believe me, there are some in Washington who would like to!  But no, actually it’s you.  You own America!  So now the question becomes simple.  Let’s just say, for the sake of example that you own a house that has a nice, large front yard.  Beautiful, isn’t it?  Now let’s imagine that you notice people walking across your yard every day.  Not a few people, mind you, and not just the neighborhood kids.  These are people you’ve never seen before.  You have no idea who they are, their motivation, or intent.  
You grow tired of this unceasing traffic.  So now what?  Can you do something about it?  Certainly.  You build a fence around your yard.  Now, who can come in?  You, of course, your friends, and people you invite in.  Like minded-people.  
So why is it any different for the nation?  Now, we can have a somewhat liberal policy about how many people we allow inside our borders.  That’s fine with me.  But don’t you deserve to know who is coming into your country?  Don’t you prefer like-minded people?  People who want to be here, who love freedom like you do, who have the same values as you?  Not criminals, not drug runners, or the like.  We want, and deserve good people.  The Federal Government has a sworn responsibility to protect it’s citizens, you.  Shouldn’t we hold them to task on that?”
Charles’ answer was met with growing applause and cheers.  Someone in the crowd shouted, “What about amnesty?”
Charles stepped from behind the podium and walked to the edge of the stage.  Even though he was not supposed to.  His time was up.  But he felt compelled to answer.  
“Amnesty?  For people who are here illegally?  Oh, come on!  Don’t we already have an path for citizenship in place?  Don’t foreigners come here from every point on the globe, and spend years working hard to be able to say, I’m a U.S. Citizen.  It’s a process.  The same should be true for anyone here illegally.  There are several ideas out there about the best way to incorporate them into our society.  Like, how long they have been here.  If they have worked hard, been law-abiding people, or, if someone who is a citizen can attest to their character.  It's not been decided which path is best.  But that also should also be a process.  Does it make sense to you to simply grant citizenship by fiat to a group of people whom we know nothing about?   It’s absurd!  And a slap in the face to all those who came here legally.
This answer was met with a standing ovation.  It took the moderator some time to get the crowd to quiet down so the debate could continue.  Charles was reprimanded for his breach of protocol.
At that point the candidacy was decided.  Charles would be the winner.  But the reason was not what most people thought, that he was the best candidate.  Charles was a sacrificial lamb.
What very few people knew was that days before, at the beginning of the convention, the big-wig party bosses had got together to estimate their candidates chances against the current resident of the White House.  The difficulties of winning against a sitting President were well known.  Their conclusion was, no way.  None of the candidates could win even though the President and his policies were unpopular to the average citizen.  The insiders wanted the number one guy to be their candidate, but if he ran and lost this election, he would be branded a loser and his chances in the next one would be diminished. They picked Charles- to lose.  He was betrayed by his own party.
